B3 launches Bitcoin futures in US dollars and expands strategies on the exchange
B3 began trading its first Bitcoin Futures Contract in US Dollars this Monday (21), identified by the ticker BTC. The initiative marks the expansion of the Brazilian exchange’s digital asset portfolio and offers new alternatives for those who want to trade Bitcoin in a regulated environment, without the need to custody the cryptocurrency directly.
How Bitcoin futures in dollars work on B3
The new contract allows investors to trade the future price of Bitcoin directly in dollars, making it easier to implement hedging and speculation strategies in a strong currency. Each contract represents 0.1 BTC and is cash-settled, meaning there is no physical delivery of Bitcoin at the end of the period. All trades are settled in Brazilian reais, based on the Bitcoin price against the US dollar, using international benchmark indices.
The product was developed to serve both institutional and retail investors, enabling exposure to Bitcoin’s performance without the complexity of creating digital wallets or handling self-custody. In addition, trading takes place within B3’s own infrastructure, under the rules established by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Brazil (CVM), bringing more security and transparency to the local market.
Impact for investors and available strategies
With the arrival of the Bitcoin futures contract in dollars, Brazilian investors gain access to instruments similar to those available on major international exchanges, such as CME and Bakkt. The new product allows for the implementation of more sophisticated strategies, such as volatility hedging, arbitrage, and leveraged trades, expanding alternatives for those already active in crypto assets or seeking portfolio diversification.
The initial trading volume and institutional interest will be important to assess the liquidity potential of the new product. B3’s entry into this segment comes at a time of growing demand for regulated crypto asset products, especially with the recent approval of Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs in Brazil and abroad.
B3 strengthens its position in the crypto asset market
The launch of the Bitcoin futures in dollars consolidates B3’s strategy to expand its presence in the digital asset universe. Since 2021, the exchange has already offered Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs, as well as crypto asset-referenced funds. Now, with the new derivative, B3 aims to attract an audience interested in more complex operations integrated with the global market.
According to recent data, the Bitcoin futures market moves billions of dollars daily on international exchanges. The arrival of this instrument in Brazil may contribute to the maturity of the local ecosystem, offering regulated options and mitigating operational risks for investors of different profiles.
What to watch next
Experts recommend monitoring the liquidity performance and adoption of the new contract in the first few months, as well as its impact on Bitcoin prices in the Brazilian market. The integration of the derivative into B3’s trading routine may also encourage the creation of new financial products linked to crypto assets in the country.
